The Fragrance
J is the sophisticated and proud glance of a geisha. As a delicate and graceful silk kimono, it expresses the elegance and charm of the Land of the Rising Sun’s thousand-year culture. Its fresh and sparkling top notes of LMR* neroli oil, mandarin and lime are reminiscent of Japanese creativity whilst evoking a basic material element: water. The heart notes — an explosion of cherry blossom, orange flower absolute and rose bloom — are filled with brightness, gentleness and elegance. The captivating base notes, a harmony of cashmere wood, rice powder and musk, recall the depth of traditions. In synergy with the fragrance I, it forms part of an olfactory journey that goes from East to West and defines the CoSTUME NATIONAL identity, marking the crossroads where past and future intersect.

Fanny Bal is a force of nature. As Dominique Ropion’s apprentice, she has access to the finest raw materials in the industry and some of its best-kept secrets; and yet, she is constantly surprising her seniors, first at ISIPCA, then at IFF, with her own independent initiatives and rigorous experimentation, both testaments to her flourishing talent. Dominique Ropion has said of his pupil that, “curious, tenacious and bold” in both her approach to perfume and as a person, Fanny Bal possesses “all the best qualities to become a great perfumer”.
Distinctive note: Sakura flower (cherry)
Smell: floral, delicate.
Origin: Lauded for its ephemeral beauty for centuries, cherry blossom is the symbolic flower of Japan. Hanami, the moment when the sakura flower blooms, is the most popular season in this country. In Japan, cherry blossom symbolises the clouds. This is due to the fact that the flowers blossom in abundance, creating fluffy clouds on the trees. The very lengthy blossoming is followed by a beautiful flower that unfortunately dies soon after, representing the ephemeral nature of life. This is why cherry blossom is the symbol of mortality in Japan and is often used in artistic representations.
Extraction: the raw material is recreated in the laboratory by the perfumer.
